# Rolling grants vs grant rounds: which to apply to

> Rolling grants vs grant rounds: 78 of 99 Web3 programs take applications any time. Pros, cons and a strategy for each, plus how to track round deadlines.

Last reviewed 2026-10-31. Dates are UTC.

Rolling grants accept applications at any time and review each one as it arrives; grant rounds open for a fixed window and review everything together after the deadline. As of October 31, 2026, 78 of the 99 programs in web3grant's directory are rolling and 14 run rounds. Apply to a rolling program when your proposal is ready, and prepare for a round before it opens.

## Key takeaways

- In web3grant's directory of 99 programs, 78 (79%) are rolling, 14 (14%) run rounds, 4 (4%) are retroactive and 3 (3%) use quadratic funding, as of 2026-10-31.
- On October 31, 2026, 80 programs are always open, 7 have a round open and 12 are closed between rounds.
- The median time to a decision is 4 weeks, and 21 programs decide in 3 weeks or less, though most of these times are our estimates rather than published figures.
- "Always open" doesn't always mean actively funding: Filecoin Open Grants has not replied to proposals filed since April 2026.
- Rounds stall too: Arbitrum's D.A.O. Grant Program has had no new season since March 2026, and Project Catalyst has named no next round.

## What are rolling grants?

A rolling grant program takes applications year-round with no deadline and reviews them in the order they arrive. You apply when your proposal is ready, and the program answers when its review is done.

[Zcash Community Grants](https://www.web3grant.com/grants/zcash-community-grants) is a typical example: you can apply at any time, your application must be posted on the Zcash Community Forum before the committee votes, and a decision typically takes about 3 weeks. The Kaia Foundation calls its [IOK Fund](https://www.web3grant.com/grants/kaia-iok-fund) an evergreen program that is always open barring exceptional circumstances.

Some rolling programs still decide in batches. The Tezos Foundation reviews applications quarterly, and the Hashgraph Association's board decides once a quarter. Rolling intake means you can apply any day, not that you'll hear back any day.

## What is a grant round?

A grant round, also called a cycle, season or epoch, opens for a fixed window, often with a set budget, and reviews all applications together after it closes. Results usually come out at the same time for everyone.

Round lengths vary a lot. The [Rocket Pool GMC](https://www.web3grant.com/grants/rocket-pool-gmc-grants) runs monthly rounds with a deadline on the 7th at 23:59 UTC. OpenSats opens a window every quarter. The [Stellar Community Fund](https://www.web3grant.com/grants/stellar-community-fund) runs numbered rounds back to back: SCF #45 awarded about $4.04M to 40 projects, and SCF #46 closes on November 8, 2026. The [Stacks Endowment](https://www.web3grant.com/grants/stacks-endowment-grants) runs quarterly cycles and has $300,000 reserved for its next round, which had no dates as of October 2026.

## Rolling grants vs grant rounds compared

The two models differ in timing, competition and the risks you carry:

| | Rolling grants | Grant rounds |
| --- | --- | --- |
| When you apply | Any time | Only during the window |
| How you are reviewed | One by one, as applications arrive | In a batch after the deadline |
| Who you compete with | The program's bar and remaining budget | Everyone else in the same round |
| When you hear back | Open-ended; median estimate 4 weeks | On the round's published timeline |
| Main risk | A quiet stall with no reply | Missing the window, or a round that never comes |

## Pros and cons of rolling grants

Rolling programs suit builders who need money when the work is ready, not when a calendar says so. The advantages:

- **You apply at your best moment**, such as right after a release, when your evidence is strongest.
- **No deadline crunch.** You can take the time to get the budget and milestones right.
- **Some are fast.** Kaia's IOK Fund, Nosana and the Reactive Dev Fund have estimated decision times of about 2 weeks.

The drawbacks are less visible:

- **Nothing forces a decision.** As of October 2026, proposals filed with [Filecoin Open Grants](https://www.web3grant.com/grants/filecoin-open-grants) since April 2026 have had no reply.
- **"Open" can mean nothing to apply to.** The Ethereum Foundation's [Ecosystem Support Program](https://www.web3grant.com/grants/ethereum-foundation-esp) is listed as rolling, but open proposals ended in 2025 and, as of October 1, 2026, no Wishlist or RFP items are open.
- **Budgets drain over the year.** The Uniswap Foundation is spending down its remaining grants budget and plans to close once that budget is committed.
- **Activity can fade quietly.** The last winner announcement on BNB Chain's blog is from 2023, and VeChain's VeBetter grants received one application in Q2 2026 and processed none.

## Pros and cons of grant rounds

Rounds trade flexibility for predictability. The advantages:

- **A clear timeline.** You know when to apply and roughly when results arrive.
- **Published budgets.** Many rounds state the pot upfront, such as MoonDAO's Q4 2026 project budget of $8,500 USDC.
- **Comparable results.** Batch review and public results show what got funded, which helps your next application.

The drawbacks:

- **Miss the window and you wait.** A quarterly program can mean three months before your next chance.
- **Rounds get paused or replaced.** Arbitrum's D.A.O. Grant Program Season 3 closed on March 17, 2026 with no Season 4 proposed. Project Catalyst's Fund15 voting has been paused since January 13, 2026, and the pilot that replaced it closed on August 20, 2026 with no next round named.
- **Competition can be fierce when money is tight.** Rocket Pool's Round 41 declined every application, and Round 40 approved 1 of 10.

## Which should you apply to?

Pick by your timing and your fit, not by the model alone:

- **You are ready now and need money soon:** start with rolling programs that have fast decisions and show recent activity.
- **Your work matches a round's theme:** a themed round, such as Octant's privacy-focused Epoch 13 (now closed, with no date for Epoch 14), can be a better fit than a general program.
- **You want community visibility:** rounds with public forums or community votes put your project in front of an ecosystem.
- **Both fit:** you can usually apply to a rolling program and a round at the same time if you disclose it. Our guide to [applying for multiple grants](https://www.web3grant.com/guides/applying-to-multiple-grants) covers how.

### Strategy for rolling programs

Before you apply, check that the program is alive: recent grantee announcements, a busy forum category, and any notice on its web3grant page. Apply when your evidence is freshest. If the program's typical decision time passes with no reply, follow up once, politely, through the official channel.

### Strategy for grant rounds

Do the work between rounds: draft the proposal, budget and references before the window opens. OpenSats, for example, asks general grant applicants for at least two written references. Submit early in the window rather than on the last day, and check the deadline's time zone on the program's own site. Read the previous round's results to see what won.

Note: As of Oct 29, 2026 prezenti.xyz says both that Season 3 is open until Dec 29 and that it has concluded. The forum announcement still gives Aug 12 to Dec 29. Check with Prezenti before you put time into an application.

Of the twelve programs closed between rounds, some have a next date. Shutter DAO 0x36 said its Round 2 launches on November 16, 2026, with $7,000 plus unused Round 1 funds, and no deadline published yet. Stacks Endowment, Octant and FIL-RetroPGF had not announced their next rounds as of October 29, 2026. Retroactive and quadratic programs have their own rhythms, covered in our guides to [retroactive public goods funding](https://www.web3grant.com/guides/retroactive-public-goods-funding) and [quadratic funding](https://www.web3grant.com/guides/quadratic-funding-explained).

## How to track grant rounds

Round dates move, and new rounds open with little notice. Three tools on web3grant help:

- **The [deadline calendar](https://www.web3grant.com/deadlines)** shows every round that opens or closes in the next four months. You can subscribe to its calendar feed once and your calendar app stays up to date.
- **[Deadline alerts](https://www.web3grant.com/#alerts)** email you when a round opens that fits, and again three days before it closes.
- **The [watchlist](https://www.web3grant.com/watchlist)** keeps the programs you care about in one place.

Also follow each program's own channel, such as Rocket Pool's monthly call threads on its governance forum or the [OpenSats General Fund](https://opensats.org/projects/general_fund) page, since that is where dates are set. To browse every program by model and status, use the [grant directory](https://www.web3grant.com/grants).

## FAQ

### Are rolling grants easier to get than grant rounds?

Rolling grants are not necessarily easier to get than grant rounds. A rolling program judges each application against its own bar and remaining budget, while a round ranks you against everyone who applied in the same window. Rolling programs avoid deadline crowding but can stall without a reply. Your odds depend more on fit, evidence and the program's current budget than on the model.

### How often do grant rounds open?

Grant rounds open on very different schedules. In web3grant's directory, Rocket Pool's GMC runs monthly rounds, OpenSats and the Stacks Endowment work in quarterly cycles, and the Stellar Community Fund runs numbered rounds back to back. Others, such as Octant's epochs, are announced one at a time with no fixed calendar. A round program's own forum or site sets the dates.

### What does "closed between rounds" mean?

"Closed between rounds" means a round-based program's last window has ended and the next one has not opened yet. You can't apply until it does. As of October 31, 2026, 12 programs in web3grant's directory are in this state, including several retro and quadratic programs. Some have announced a next date; many have not, so a closed program may or may not return.

### Do rolling grant programs ever close?

Rolling grant programs do close or change. The Ethereum Foundation's ESP ended open proposals in 2025 and now funds only posted Wishlist and RFP items, none of which were open on October 1, 2026. The Uniswap Foundation is spending down its remaining grants budget and plans to close once it is committed. Check a rolling program's recent activity before you invest time in an application.
